What are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are abnormally enlarged superficial veins that most commonly appear in the legs. They often appear as purple or blue twisting, bulging vessels that rise above the surface of the skin. Healthy leg veins contain one-way valves that allow the transportation of blood back to the heart, while varicose veins have leaky valves that no longer function properly.

As many as 50 million adults in the United States are affected by varicose veins or vein disease. Having varicose veins could be a sign of a more serious underlying health problem, so you should seek varicose vein treatment immediately.

What Causes Vein Disease?

Vein disease usually develops over time. Some things you can’t change, and others you can improve. Common risk factors include:

  • Family history: If close relatives have vein problems, you’re more likely to develop them too.
  • Getting older: Veins and vein valves can weaken with age.
  • Being female: Hormones can affect vein strength, so vein problems are more common in women.
  • Extra weight: More weight can put extra pressure on the veins in your legs.
  • Pregnancy: Pregnancy hormones and the growing uterus can make it harder for blood to return from the legs.
  • Lots of standing or sitting: Staying in one position for long periods can slow blood flow in the legs.
  • Past blood clots or leg injury: A previous clot or injury can damage vein valves and lead to long-term vein problems.

If you have symptoms like aching, heaviness, swelling, or visible varicose veins, a vein ultrasound can help determine the cause and the best treatment.

Signs and Symptoms of Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are commonly found on the inside of the legs and back of the calves, although they can form anywhere on the legs from the groin to the ankles. These damaged veins can be both unsightly and painful. Varicose veins often present themselves with the following symptoms:
