| History Veins are present in all parts of the body and, are responsible for carrying blood back to the heart. In the legs, veins are located in the fatty tissue under the skin and in the deeper muscular compartments. Leg veins normally have a series of valves which open in one direction allowing segmental flow up toward the heart. An estimated 30 million adults in the USA have leaky valves in the superficial veins which results in increased pressure in the veins of the legs. A variety of clinical presentations may result from the damaged vein valves, including spider veins, ropey varicose veins, leg swelling, discolored and thickened skin and in more severe cases, bleeding and ulceration. With the introduction of endovenous closure in 1999, physicians now have a definitive, minimally invasive treatment to offer their patients with underlying venous problems. |
